How to Beat Holiday Stress.

The holidays are a time for joy, anticipation, family and gratitude. But often it's a time when people feel the most stress, aggravation and anger. Familial expectations, long lines, and financial constraints make the holidays a burden for some. So how do you turn "Bah humbug" into "Seasons Greetings?"

Disorganization fuels much of the stress. Trying to find last minute gifts, of food items. Making reservations for family members, trying to find the Christmas china, realizing you don't have enough for that jaw-dropping gift you wanted to get the kids, are all problems that could be headed off before they happen.

Money concerns are also on the rise at Christmastime. Not only do you have to buy Christmas presents but you also have to buy food, Christmas cards, Christmas decorations and those extra little gifts for people you forget about.

To make matters worse, you realize you actually have a Holiday savings account but you neglected to make deposits. During all the hustle and bustle it's natural to forget about taking care of yourself. It's also prime cold and flu season and the winter weather doesn't help any.

Stress wears down your immune system and the last thing you need is to get sick when you've got Christmas wrapping to do. So take a step back and start early.

You probably know weeks in advance certain toys that you want to buy for your son or daughter, why not buy, wrap and hide them in the rafters? Some stores even have layaway so that you can buy your Christmas gifts pay for them in payments and pick them up in time for Christmas.

Make dinner and hotel reservations a month or two before December. Not only will you feel secure about having this task done but you won't have to settle for what's left or risk calling all over town for availability.

Try buying Christmas cards and decorations right after Christmas for the following year. Not only will you be prepared for next year, you'll also get a great deal on discounted cards and decorations.

This is also a great time to stock up on generic little gifts and stocking stuffers that you can have on hand for those last minute dinner parties or for when you get an unexpected gift and would like to return the favor.

Things like a classy vase, or beautiful picture frame, a cute photo album or classic novel are all great buys that could work in a pinch for a variety of different people in your life. Finally, remember to slow down and take care of you.

When family starts to get to you, before you say anything suck in a deep breath, hold it for two or three seconds and then exhale slowly.

For some, counting to 10 before remarking helps. If it feels like taking pause isn't going to stop you from blowing your top, excuse yourself and take a brisk walk.

Leave room for one very important appoint. An appointment with you. Schedule time to either spend alone time in a quiet room, walk 9 holes of golf by yourself, have a spa day or massage, or just soak in a tub.

Whatever it is you do to clear your mind and relax your body, schedule time for that activity on a calendar, let everyone know you intend to keep that appointment and take your mind off your holiday duties and obligations.

Keeping your sanity is one of the simplest ways to make the holiday season a joyous one.

Have A Stress Free Christmas

With all of the activity surrounding the Christmas season, it's almost hard not to get stressed by the end. There are some things that you can do, though, to make it a bit more bearable.

Shop online or via mail order catalogs where possible. You won't need to wade through huge crowds, you can shop in your pajamas, and you have access to a much larger selection of gifts than you would have in brick and mortar stores.

During Christmas, many online retailers offer special promotions on shipping. You might even end up saving money (no gas to pay for, and you can compare prices online easily).

If you end up shopping in brick and mortar stores, make a list beforehand and stick to it. It is a lot easier to adhere to a list versus wandering around aimlessly for hours in the stores.

For this, you might want to consider taking friends along with you. You can go to the mall, shop separately, and meet up to relax over a cup of hot chocolate or coffee later on.

Learn how to make lemonade out of lemons. If you know that you have to go to a dreaded dinner with certain relatives, for example, then invite a few friendlier people along.

Try to break up the chores and do a little at a time. For example, if you decide to cook Christmas dinner, you can cook certain things the day before so that you aren't in such frenzy the day of Christmas. If you give out Christmas cards, put the pile by your nightstand, and write out a few every night before you go to bed.

Make a goal. When you have a destination point, you can visualize it. Decide to be complete by December 22nd, for example, so that you can relax the next few days. You might even consider listing out your goals and due dates.

Exercise. Exercise is always an immediate mood lifter. Take as little as 20 minutes and go for a walk. You will reduce stress hormones and increase your endorphins, thus putting you in a much more relaxed state.

Avoid overeating. It is very easy to eat more than you normally would, with all of the parties and cookies being passed around. However, when you eat too much, you'll feel stuffed and uncomfortable. Eat smaller portions and be happier.

Take time outs for yourself. Take as little as 15 minutes a day. Listen to relaxing music, go for a walk, or paint your nails – whatever will make you happy. These 15 minutes can absolutely revolutionize your day.

Follow these tips, and by the time Christmas comes around, you should be as upbeat and radiant as your Christmas tree.
